Alki Elementary School consists of an 85,000-square-foot facility on a very tight 1.4-acre site. The new three-story addition was constructed in place of the original facility and utilizes mass timber as the structural grid of the building. Additional sustainable features include daylight in all of the classrooms and high-efficiency geothermal heating and ventilation. The scope of work also included renovations of the gymnasium that is shared with the adjacent Alki Community Center, improvements to the nearby South Alki Playground and the shared pedestrian parkway that connects all three. Designed by Mahlum Architects, the school can serve up to 500 students.
