The first half of 2024 has accumulted some exciting project wins for Cornerstone, including our first collegiate project!
College Place Elementary School and Middle School — Cornerstone was selected to build two new replacement schools for the Edmonds School District in Lynnwood. The district secured a larger bond measure and will use approximately $210 million of it to build a new dual-language elementary school — College Place Elementary School, and a new middle school — College Place Middle School. Both builds will be completed as one project and contribute to the district’s goals of relocating sixth graders from elementary schools to middle schools.
The new elementary facility will be a 550-student capacity, dual-language school for grades K-5. The new middle school will boast a 1,000-student capacity and incorporate sixth graders to serve grades 6-8. The designer, NAC Architects, will involve community members in the process to plan and design both schools. The district will also implement the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) seven core competencies required for the Accredited Learning Environment Planner (ALEP) designation.
Cedarcrest Middle School — Cornerstone has been selected to construct the modernization of Bethel School District’s Cedarcrest Middle School in Spanaway. The current school serves approximately 700 students, but it has outgrown the current facility which was built in 1982.
Funding from a bond passed in 2019 was earmarked for Cedarcrest Middle School because the current building no longer meets the district’s standards for learning spaces. With this planned $44 million modernization, the district is seeking to: increase the square footage of the school to accommodate both current and projected future student enrollment of 800-850 students; add classrooms with more natural light and thus eliminate the 10 portables which are currently on site; increase the size of the hallways to improve student circulation; increase the size and improve the layout of the commons area; and improve the facility’s technology, security and data infrastructure. The exact scope of the project has yet to be determined by the district and the project architect, Tacoma-based BCRA.
Cascadia College Gateway — Cornerstone earned it's first collegiate project win by being selected to build the Cascadia Gateway CC5 Building for Cascadia College in Bothell. Next summer will kick off the nearly two-year construction project. The new four-story, 37,600-square-foot Gateway will serve as the front door to the college, welcoming students and providing a consolidation of student support services which are currently spread throughout various buildings on campus. With these services under one roof, students will have a place to connect with those services as well as with one another, deepening their sense of community and engagement in their collegiate experience.
The building’s designer, Mahlum Architects, has designed the mixed-use education facility to meet Cascadia’s commitment to high-performance sustainable design and construction. The building will target LEED Silver certification but is currently tracking towards the higher LEED Gold certification.
